Welcome to Outdoor Lexicon, where the worlds of adventure and learning converge to simplify outdoor discovery. Based in the heart of Ohio, a place known for its warm-hearted people and scenic beauty, Outdoor Lexicon thrives in a region not typically associated with towering mountains or vast oceans.
Here, we believe that outdoor adventure is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Our mission at Outdoor Lexicon is to bridge the gap between the desire to venture outdoors and the know-how to make it happen. We understand that not everyone has the tools, knowledge, or confidence to fully embrace the outdoor experience. That's where Outdoor Lexicon steps in as your guide.
We cater to those hungry for outdoor excitement, offering a diverse range of services. Whether you're a beginner seeking certification, looking for equipment recommendations, or dreaming of the perfect adventure, Outdoor Lexicon is your go-to resource. We're part of a larger community dedicated to breaking down barriers that keep individuals from immersing themselves in the beauty of nature. Join us as we transform aspirations into reality, empower learning, and create a world where the outdoors is more accessible.
Meet Matt Hartman, the heart of Outdoor Lexicon—owner, lead instructor, father, husband, and seasoned outdoor educator. He brings a refreshing approachability to the field, aiming to reduce barriers to the outdoors through education and fun. With a wealth of trip-leading experience across the U.S., particularly in the Grand Canyon and Utah's National Parks, the Ohio native led the outdoor program at the Ohio State University for a decade.
From Sequoia and Kings Canyon to Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, and local gems like Ohiopyle and Dolly Sods, Matt has led or supported expeditions, fostering a love for the outdoors amongst his many students. As a facilitator, he's collaborated with groups like student organizations, athletic teams, youth and scout groups, creating meaningful retreats, intentional trips, and team development programs.
A passionate mountain biker and member of the COMBO Board of Directors, Matt instructs various outdoor disciplines, sharing wilderness first aid skills since 2007 as a SOLO instructor. A WEMT and Leave No Trace (LNT) Master Educator (Level 2), he earned a Master's in Recreation from Ohio University in 2008 and an MBA from OSU in 2023.
A family man, Matt cherishes adventures with his spouse, Kelly, and sons, Wyatt and Deacon.
Outdoor Lexicon is his brainchild, with a mission to create pathways for others to embrace the outdoors.
